General English

At Milner School, there are 6 levels of Intensive General English: Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate A, Intermediate B, Higher Intermediate, and Advanced.  (Please note we DO NOT  take Beginners.)  On the first day of their course, students sit a written and spoken test, after which they are placed in a class appropriate to their level.  The progress of each student is monitored closely by his/her teacher, and transfers between levels are made as required and without delay.  We encourage students to communicate with their teachers directly if they have any feedback about their class.  If they wish, students may also speak to our Director of Studies about any important issues regarding their class.

A student can start an Intensive General English Course on any Monday he/she chooses (providing it is not a public holiday).  At Milner School, students may study for as little as one week, or as long as they wish, providing their visa is valid.

Intensive General English courses are offered for 15 or 22 hours a week.  The 15 hour option runs weekday mornings, Monday to Friday.  The 22 hour option runs mornings and afternoons, Monday to Thursday, and just mornings on Friday.  Students may also now choose to do just 7 hours a week, afternoons only from Monday to Thursday.  Our Academic Year Programme is another option for those who wish to study for a longer period at a cheaper rate – available for either 15 or 22 hours a week.

See information about Timetables for precise information about the daily timings of our classes.  '2010 DATES & FEES' and '2011 DATES & FEES will tell you about the costs & dates of our courses.

Most of Milner School’s students are aged between 18 and 25 years; our minimum age of enrolment is 16 years.  The classes are multinational with a maximum of 12 students per class.  The Milner School of English Certificate, stating attendance and level of proficiency, is awarded to all students who complete their courses satisfactorily.

Teaching Method --- Teaching a class

Milner School’s teaching methodology combines traditional methods with some more recent approaches, ensuring our students’ consistent language development.  Morning classes focus on grammatical areas, as well as developing learners’ macro skills.  Afternoon classes focus on communicative competence and fluency.  In general, lessons at all levels focus on grammatical structure, functions, vocabulary, communicative situations, accuracy, fluency and pronunciation.  Overall the skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading are integrated to help students develop a complete command of the English language.

Milner School’s teachers are all experienced professionals with the Cambridge CELTA/Trinity College certificate, or Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or an equivalent accepted qualification.  All our teachers speak English as their first language and have been carefully selected for not only their qualifications, but their ability to work together as a team and relate well to young adults.  Most have taught English abroad and between them speak a variety of languages.
